Beautiful People

May 29, 1993: I asked a huge round rock that was in the middle of Ney Springs Creek, “What do you have to tell me today?” I knew there was a mineral spring resort in that area from 1989 to 1921 where people came to relax and heal themselves in the mineral waters. This is what the rock said.

Beautiful People
by Creek Rock

I’ve seen many things come and go my way.
Many things of beauty . . .
many things not.
My favorite story goes back to the time
when the river was aglow
with the beautiful people.

These beautiful people came
in many shapes, many sizes.
Many attitudes were displayed
and many stories spun.
They meandered quite harmlessly
between here and there
laughing gently over this tale or that.

They considered themselves accomplished
and very well read
speaking only of that which was proper
for the influence surrounding them
was filled with “shoulds” and “don’ts”
and they respected this creed to the utmost.

Why, do you know what happened if one fell astray
fitfully teaming with mirth and good cheer?
The audacity of such emotion
would get them shunned for years.
Or even worse
it might lead people to believe
they had lost their mind.

They loved to tease each other
as they frolicked among the oaks,
gently passing judgment for so little.
What playful souls they were
some deep and thoughtful
but most came for a good long soak in the waters.

T’was the day when I reveled
with life’s beautiful people . . .
the ones who never cared
to ask the time of day.
